Kenya’s retired Chief Justice Dr Willy Mutunga has disclosed that they have started mobilizing former students of the University of Dares Salaam in Tanzania who were in the same year with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to sign a document declaring him a shame for illegally persecuting his longtime political opponent Dr Kizza Besigye.
Mutunga made the revelation when he was hosted by Robert Kabushenga the former Chief Executive Officer of the New Vision on his X space.
He explained that what Museveni is doing in Uganda as a president is giving their university a bad image and should be told to stop or they will disown him as one of their own.
Justice Mutunga revealed that by the time he was reading law at the university of Dar salaam, Museveni was two years in front of him and every person at the University knew him.
He added that Museveni’s popularity resulted from his position as a student leader who was very proud of being African.
Justice Mutunga narrated a story where Students had a habit of going to the streets to beg for money. However, one day when they were going to beg as they routinely did each week, Museveni commanded a move to deflate the tyres of the car they were going to use. Museveni warned them that what they were trying to do was embarrassing and not African.
Justices Mutunga claimed that at the university, Museveni was a special student who had bodyguards and his roommate James Wapakhabulo the former speaker of the Ugandan parliament was in charge of cleaning their room, washing his clothes and ironing them and brushing his shoes .
He narrated that his first time to talk to Museveni was when he found him standing at the main building of the university.
He asked him why he doesn’t talk to students who go to the street to beg instead of using force.
He narrated that Museveni looked at him for some minutes without saying a word and after he asked him which country he comes from and the years he had spent at the school.
When he responded, Museveni told them that force is the only tactic to discipline university students.
Justice Mutunga claimed that when Museveni declared a guerilla war against Dr Milton Obote, as his old boys at the university, they started mobilizing for funds to facilitate the armed struggle and they were very happy with his victory when he took over power.
He disclosed that they were happy that their very own was going to change Uganda’s style of leadership and stop merciless killings of innocent Ugandans orchestrated by President Idi Amin.
Justice Mutunga said that he got to know Dr Besigye when he was working in a Nairobi hospital and he remembers being told that he abandoned his well-paying job to join the armed struggle where he did a great job of treating soldiers and civilians.
He argued that he is very shocked to see that the government he brought to power is persecuting him.
He held that kidnapping Besigye in Kenya and parading him before the military court brought shame to East African partner states and Africa at large and all citizens of all the countries have to fight together to end such misdemeanors.
He explained that after Museveni’s OBs sign the petition, they will match in big numbers to Uganda’s High Commission offices in Nairobi and deliver their petition.
Once it is submitted, they will address a meeting and declare him a disgrace.
However, he disclosed that he was very scared of delivering the petition physically to President Museveni.
Kabushenga advised him to post their petition on X explaining that it will be easier for Museveni to see it because he is very active on X.
He advised him that if he gives it to the Ugandan ambassador in Kenya, Museveni might take years without receiving it.
However, Hajji Faruk Kirunda, President Museveni’s deputy press secretary explained that Besigye is not being prosecuted by Museveni himself but the State of Uganda.
President Museveni also wondered why Besigye supporters like Justice Mutunga don’t ask why their man was arrested and ask for a quick trial so as to expose the State in case they are acting out of the law.
