Flamboyant Bukoto Central Member of Parliament Richard Ssebamala as assured Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine) and the entire National Unity Platform (NUP) that he is not going to be threatened by the verbal attacks from their supporters because of his overwhelming support to amend the laws that govern the choosing of the Leader of Opposition in Parliament.
Parliament gave leave to Buyaga West County MP Denis Namara to prepare and table on the floor of parliament his Administration of Parliament Amendment Bill which opposition claim is targeting the person of Joel Ssenyonyi the current Leader of Opposition in Parliament.
The Justice and Constitution Affairs minister who also doubles as the president of the Democratic Party (DP) confirmed that the Attorney General’s chambers confirmed to him that government lawyers have started drafting the said bill as the law requires.
The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) strongman David Kabanda said that with the blessing of their supreme leader who is also the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), the bill will be passed within three months and after Ssenyonyi will be removed from office.
Gen Muhoozi directed Kabanda to supervise Ssenyonyi’s removal from the office noting that he wants PLU to take over that office.
Even though opposition legislators and independents are protesting the bill, Ssebamala, a DP member strongly supports it and even told Bobi Wine that he will not be scared of his supporters who use both mainstream and social media to attack his personality and humiliate him.
He boasted that he is a hard nut to crack and when he declares war against something, nothing can divert him.
He divulged that these are the tricks he used to floor former Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi.
“I’m not a first person who you will bully on social media. They abused my elder the Katikkiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga, they abused the Archbishop Dr Kazimba Mugalu, they even reached the extent of insulting members of the Buganda Kingdom royal family, so I cannot be scared by their abuses. I will not be diverted from fighting for accountability; people should account for the billions of taxpayers’ money allocated to their offices,” Ssebamala said.
He insisted that opposition cannot pressurize the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) to account for taxpayers’ money when opposition is hiding in abusing those asking for accountability by challenging Ssenyonyi to cite one activity where he used money allocated to his office to help other opposition political parties.
He insisted that he wants a law that will give opportunity to other opposition MPs and independents because they also contested against NRM candidates to participate in choosing the Leader of Opposition in Parliament.
He explained that currently, there is no mechanism on how to remove the Leader of Opposition in Parliament even though the law is clear on removing other leaders including the Prime Minister.
Rogers Mulindwa, the NRM Secretariat senior Communications Officer said that even though he supports the bill of all opposition legislators choosing their leader in parliament, he does not support the move to have independents to participate in choosing the LOP because they’re not in opposition.
Even though Ssebamala denied being in touch with Namara in driving the passing of the said bill, sources allege that he was briefed that when it is passes, Gen Muhoozi will support his candidature to become the next Leader of Opposition in Parliament.
Others claim that Ssebamala is supporting the bill because he sees it as an opportunity to revenge on Bobi Wine who he accuses of fronting a candidate against him in the 2026 parliamentary elections.
