Rogers Mulindwa the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretariat Senior Communications Officer has asked President Museveni to look for someone from Buganda when choosing Mariam Wangadya’s replacement as the chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC).
Even though he didn’t reveal their name, Mulindwa disclosed that Buganda is well prepared to take over the slot and a person from the region will perform well in protecting human rights in the country.
Sources said that since Wangadya’s resignation, a number of individuals have started lobbying members of the Deep State and those in intelligence to recommend them to the appointing authority.
Sources said that among those lobbying for the job are seasoned constitution law giant and former Bugweri County Member of Parliament Abdul Katuntu, former Makerere university law don and also Mawokota South Member of Parliament Yusuf Nsibambi, UHRC Commissioner and former Democratic Party (DP) member Shifrah Lukwago among others.

However, sources disclosed that Katuntu is in the early lead because of his credentials on fighting for human rights and the factor of being a former lawyer who practiced with the International Criminal Court.
But Nsibambi is also desperately lobbying for a public office after missing out on being appointed as a minister.
“Healthwise, Nsibambi is not well and it is the reason why he crossed from the opposition to NRM because he needed money for medication. Without a public office, it will be difficulty for him to survive,” a close friend said.
State House sources however said that appointing Wangadya’s replacement is not on the president’s urgent list and chances are high that she is going to finish her term which is ending in 2027.
Attorney General Dr Sam Mayanja guided that Wangadya’s letter reached the President and him being the appointing authority, he is the one with the powers to allow the resignation or not.
