Henry Okello Oryem the junior minister in charge of international relations wants defeated National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine) to be criminally charged with treason because of the statements he made on the international forum against his country and leaders.
On Wednesday, Bobi Wine addressed the Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy in Switzerland and narrated how President Museveni, his son who is also the presidential adviser on special operations and the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, judicial officers and security officers violate the rights of the opposition supporters and leaders.
He claimed that a number of his supporters are rotting in prisons on fabricated charges while he is on the run and his family is in hiding because they fear for their lives after the military raided and took over their home
He divulged that a number of illegalities were committed in the 2026 general election which resulted into Museveni’s win. He narrated how the internet was switch off, journalists threatened, opposition leaders arrested and many citizens kidnapped.
He pleaded with the international community not to leave Uganda on its own but help them so that they also enjoy their rights as other international citizens. He proposed for the sanctioning of President Museveni, Gen Muhoozi, top government officials especially judicial officers and security bosses.
He also asked the Uganda development partners to think about cutting off the financial and developmental assistance they are extending to Uganda since it is being used by Museveni to torment his own citizens to consolidate his power.
However, minister Oryem said that Bobi Wine’s address to the Geneva Summit is not going to change leadership in Uganda given that Ugandans have already used the just concluded general elections to vote their new leaders with a term of five years in office where Bobi Wine lost in a free and fair elections.
He added that what Bobi Wine’s address at the international forum where he undermined his country’s leaders is treasonous because his statements are threatening the country’s development.
He noted that Uganda will get the opportunity to clean its name on the international forum because the world has become village and people know what is going on in each and every corner of the world.
It should remember that after the 2021 general elections, Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka and officials from Uganda Human Rights Commission travelled to Geneva and appeared before the United Nations Committee on Human Rights to respond to a number of human rights violation issues raised by Bobi Wine and his supporters.
During that meeting, NUP supporters stormed the meeting in demonstration telling the members on the committee that Kiwanuka’s statement were filled with lies.
Bobi Wine, a pop star joined politics in 2017 after winning the Kyadondo East Member of Parliament seat in a by election, he later contested for president in 2021 and 2026 where Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama the chairperson of the electoral commission announced Museveni as winner.
Since Bobi Wine joined politics, a number of government officials have been sanctioned and among them include: Speaker of parliament Annet Anita Among, former Inspector General of police Gen Edward Kale Kayihura, military commanders Maj Gen Stephen Sabiiti Muzeyi, Maj Gen Don Nabasa, Maj Gen James Birungi, Lt Gen Peter Elwelu, Maj Gen Christopher Ddamulira, AIGP Frank Mwesigwa among others
They were accused of violating human rights and corruption.
Among the countries that sanctioned them include; United States of America, United Kingdom, European Union member States, United Arab Emirates and others.
