As outgoing Chief Justice Owiny Dollo prepares to retire after clocking 70 years, the fight to replace him is becoming hotter by the day after another Supreme Court judge joined the race.
The race so far includes; Justice Mike Chibita who is justice of the Supreme Court; Justice Dr Flavian Zeija the deputy Chief Justice and head of the Court of Appeal and the Constitutional Court; Justice Catherine Bamugemereire also a justice of the Supreme Court and law giant Justice professor Lillian Tibatemwa- Ekirikubinza, justice of the Supreme Court
According to highly placed sources in the judiciary, the Judicial Service Commission is at the tail end of the process of looking for a new Chief Justice and the names of the successful candidates will be forwarded to the President to choose the suitable person who will succeed Dollo who is retiring on 18th January, 2026.
Observers following the process of recruiting a new Chief Justice told this website that Justice Madrama’s decision to join the race is going to give the appointing authority more choices as he makes his final decision.
They added that Justice Madrama understands the judiciary very well because he successfully passed through the ranks from being a judge of the High Court, was promoted to the Court of Appeal and to the Supreme Court. He has made landmark judgments especially when he was still at the Commercial Division of the High Court.
He is also seen as a judicial officer with very few enemies in the judiciary, among lawyers and among members of the Deep State who influence Museveni’s decisions when he is appointing powerful individuals in his government
Being a Prince from West Nile also increases Justice Madrama’s chances of catching the appointing authority’s eye.
According to sources, Museveni is likely to announce the next chief justice after the 2026 general elections. It is alleged he will also appoint and promote other judges to the Court of Appeal and to the Supreme Court.
