Ono Bwino has exclusively learnt that Fred Mukasa Mbidde and Gerald Siranda the Democratic Party (DP) National vice president and Secretary General respectively are clandestinely planning to impeach their president general who has just been appointed as the Justice and Constitutional Affairs minister Norbert Mao.

Mbidde confirmed that since the electioneering period ended, him together with other party leaders have been planning on a move to return the party to it’s original agenda of fighting for national power instead of being used as a vehicle to seal political deals,

“Our great grandfathers started DP to fight for democracy, Rule of Law and national power. That’s why even when they were forming political coalitions with other political parties to form government, they first consulted so that all party members benefit from the deal unlike the recent one which our friend Mao signed with President Museveni which is benefiting him alone,” Mbidde said.

He regretted having supported Mao to take over DP leadership and declared him a selfish and hopeless leader who only thinks about himself.

He narrated when he compromised other party leaders not support Mao’s plan to contest against president Museveni who the party had signed with a corporation agreement

“I was surprised seeing Mao together with the Secretary General ordering the printing of his presidential posters and notifying the electoral commission that he needed papers to start looking for signatures to support his candidature. It was not until I put up a fight and told them to stop playing on our intelligence by claiming that he was going to compete against a person they signed a corporation agreement, and I won the day,” Mbidde said.

He further accused Mao of not guiding the party candidates who contested for various political offices in the 2026 general elections adding that it is the reason they performed poorly because they went into the elections without a clear message to deliver to voters and people were confused on whether they were dealing with people in the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) or opposition.

He further accused Mao of being a poor negotiator which resulted into NRM fronting candidates against DP yet they had already signed a corporation agreement leaving every DP candidate was on their own.

Mbidde claimed that Mao has created divisions in the party whereby he created a group of people who don’t question whatever decision he makes yet they are very radical to those who question the way he runs the party.

“He has frustrated many young people’s political careers in DP and made them unemployed because he failed to negotiate for them a good deal with the ruling government as Dr Paul Kawanga Ssemogerere did when joining Museveni in 1986,” Mbidde said.

Concerning some of Mao’s demeaning public statements, Mbidde disclosed that they are embarrassing their party which is known to be for intellectuals. He added that his poor performance in the election of the speaker of parliament also placed them in bad light that is why he should leave power with immediate effect.

Ono Bwino has learnt that Mbidde is set to publicly announce their fight to oust Mao from DP headquarters on Thursday in a press conference at the offices of his law firm a long Entebbe Road.

When contacted, Fred Mwesigwa the personal assistant and spokesperson to Mao confirmed being in the know of all the plans Mbidde and Siranda have against his boss but he boasted that they will fail.

“All those are fake politicians, just political dealers looking for survival. They misled the former speaker of parliament Anita Among because they thought that she was going to help them secure political offices,” Mwesigwa said.

He challenged Mbidde and Siranda that if they feel men enough, let them hold the press conference at their party headquarters.

He asked them to cooperate if they want to be added on the team which is negotiating the renewal of the DP-NRM marriage agreement .
