Maverick Kira Municipality legislator Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda has made a serious allegation against senior politician and also former Kampala Central Member of Parliament Capt Edward Francis Babu that his declaration to contest for the position of the National Resistance Movement (NRM)’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) is a ploy to secure a job in President Museveni’s government.
“Babu was a minister in president Museveni’s early government and also a Member of Parliament but since 2006 when he was defeated by Erias Lukwago until now, has been jobless. Now he badly wants a government job to be in office like former vice president Ssekandi, Amama Mbabazi who are his age mates who Museveni appointed senior presidential advisors. And by the way, these people are well paid,” Ssemujju said.
He insists that Babu knows very well that Museveni will not allow him to contest against Hajji Moses Kigongo as his national vice chairperson of the NRM. So his calculation is once he is forced out of the race, he will be compensated with a government office.
Betty Amongi Akena was the first to reveal that a number of people in the NRM have already threatened to contest for political offices but in actual sense they are using these threats to get a government jobs and president Museveni knows their plans very well.
However, Babu boasted that this time, he is not going to allow Museveni’s advice to pull out of the race. He insists that he has to put up a spirited competition against Kigongo to prove that there is internal democracy in the NRM party.
However, Ssemujju laughed at him insisting that in NRM, Museveni and Kigongo’s positions are ring fenced and no one is allowed to contest against them.
He further stated that it will be a miracle if Babu is allowed to contest against Kigongo this time.
