Senior Kampala city and Metropolitan Minister Hajjat Minsa Kabanda has revealed that when she secured the National Resistance Movement Kampala Central member of parliament ticket, her friend and also her party’s first national vice chairperson in charge of women who also doubles as the speaker of parliament Annet Anita Among gave a proposal to her on how to help her politically to win the constituency but she declined to take the offer.
Appearing on Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi’s CBS radio, Kabanda said that Among told her that she can help her by removing her competitors who were contesting against her out of the race but she declined explaining that once she takes her offer, she will not feel the people of Kampala gave her the win if she goes through unopposed given that she felt the ground was fully in her support and she was very sure of the win.
She explained that a number of her competitors thought that being a minister, she was willing to do anything to win including reaching out to them and paying them to leave the race in her favour but she surprised them when she insisted on looking for her votes and the votes of President Museveni who was the party’s presidential candidate.
“I’m very sure Rubongoya (the National Unity Platform (NUP) Secretary General and also the party candidate against Kabanda) himself knows very well that I defeated him genuinely without cheating him. When I was at Kololo where the tallying centre was together with my agents, Rubongoya came, shook my hands and greeted me telling me that it was the first time for him to physically meet me. After realising that he was defeated, he went away,” Kabanda said.
She warned Rubongoya not to accept to be misled by selfish individuals to file an election petition against her. She boasted that she will defeat him again and this time, she will ask for costs and will look for him to pay her.
Kampala Central Member of Parliament seat attracted 15 candidates. Kabanda defeated them with 22332 with Rubongoya following her closely with 18242.
Being a daughter of the constituency, who works and married in the area, Kabanda was very sure she will defeat Rubongoya who many described as a foreigner even though he had the full of his party president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine) who is a darling in Kampala.
Highly placed sources said that Kabanda is not the only big government official who declined to take the offer of going through unopposed. It is alleged Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja who was declared as Kakumiro district woman MP also declined the offer.
Sources said that Nabanja warned her colleagues who decided to take that route that they will annoy President Museveni because he is a man who likes competition that is the reason why he allows serious opposition people like Bobi Wine to contest against him and he defeats them.
