John Kabanda the president of the Federation of Uganda Traders Association (FUTA) has confirmed that all traders who participated and supported the decision of dragging controversial city businessman Hamis Kiggundu to Court over Nakivubo Channel drainage building will not benefit from the Shs20bn compensation offered by President Museveni to traders affected by October 2025 city floods.
Kabanda said that the decision was taken during last weekend’s meeting at the Office of the Prime Minister where all stakeholders in the matter participated and agreed that those who sued the businessman should continue with their court proceedings.
“Our traders were misled by fellow leaders, I advised them not to go to court but to use dialogue with our brother Ham and government officials but they decided to defy me as their leader. Now their names were removed from the list of those who are going to be compensated,” Kabanda said .
He added that the meeting also resolved that the beneficiaries will not receive their money in cash but through their bank accounts and those without one will not be compensated. He advised traders to go to their respective building chairpersons to check their names and verify their other details.
Kabanda said that the first batch of traders will start receiving their compensation next week according to Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Prime minister and by end of May 2026, all traders will be covered.
He divulged that more than 1000 traders will be compensated and 300 victims blacklisted because of suing Kiggundu who is already collecting rent from the buildings he builds on top of Nakivubo drainage channel.
Traders led by Godfrey Katongole the chairperson of the Uganda National Traders’ Alliance (UNATA) dragged Kiggundu at the Civil Division of the High Court claiming that the floods which destroyed their merchandise worth billions of shillings were caused by his action which involved blocking the drainage channel.
