Panic is high among Ugandan community staying in United States of America especially those who openly support the National Unity Platform (NUP) and their president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine) after six of them were arrested and charged with offences related to sexual and robbery.
The United States’s Department of Homeland Security confirmed the arrest of Ugandans branding them as the worst of the worst criminals.
According to the Homeland Security website, the said individuals were arrested in the operation made by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The accused persons, according to Homeland Security, were arrested in different parts of the United States after being found guilty of crimes of assault, sexual offences and fraud.
The development is part of a broader crackdown on foreigners with serious criminal record who have been hiding in United States of America after President Donald Trump directed that all illegals should be hunted, arrested so that they face the law.
Among those arrested are Hannington Mutenga who was arrested from Utah after being convicted of assault.
Others are Kiwana Mukiibi who was arrested from California after being convicted of aggravated assault with a weapon.
Adrian Kawuba was arrested from Pennsylvania after a conviction for wire fraud and Winner Mangeni who was arrested in Massachusetts after convictions for assault and fleeing from justice
Derrick Sserwanja was also arrested from Minnesota after a conviction for sexual exploitation of a minor via telecommunications
Daudah Mayanja was arrested from Vermont after a conviction for sexual assault and according to their close friends in United States, all the arrested individuals went to United States of America claiming that they were facing political prosecution in Uganda.
They added that their arrest was going to affect political and financial mobilization in America because they have been on the ground fighting for political change in Uganda.
Ono Bwino has established that recently, Ugandan security shared intelligence with other countries including United States including names and identities of Ugandans with a criminal record who are on the run.
The tough situation President Trump’s administration has put on foreigners in the US has created a lot of fear among Ugandans with some now scared that immigration enforcement could deport them back to Uganda after being arrested.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said that the operation is targeting foreigners convicted of violent crimes, gang involvement, or fraud noting that President Trump administration has allocated $45bn to hire 12,000 additional ICE agents and expand detention facilities.
She added that they have also established temporary tent camps as measures such as Operation Metro Surge which involve visible raids in sanctuary cities, and the Laken Riley Act mandates detention for certain offenses.
