Former New Vision editor John Kakande and Charles Rwomushana, a former State House operative have disclosed that President Museveni had a hand in stopping the Inspector General of Government (IGG) from sharing the wealth of government officials with the public.

Public officers by law are mandated every year to declare their wealth with the office of the IGG and according to Kakande, pioneer IGG were sharing the wealth with the media until the order was issued but he was shocked seeing former Speaker Annet Anita Among’s wealth being exposed in the public.

“I think the President and the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba who commanded the operation against Among did it intentionally to expose Among’s wealth to the public. They have scored because the public has already convicted Among on corruption allegations and Museveni and his son are now seen as saviours,” Kakande said.

He added that conservative Baganda were also provoked seeing Among buying a Rolls-Royce a gesture they interpreted as her trying to compare herself to their fallen King Sir Edward Mutesa.

Rwomushana said that at first, the cars that carried Among’s luxurious cars including Rolls-Royce were not supposed to use the Kampala city centre route on their way to Naguru police headquarters where they are currently being kept but the order was issued at the last minute and the routes changed to capture the public eye so that they support their fight against Among because bodaboda riders followed the cars up to Naguru while taking pictures and making comments.

Veteran journalist Andrew Mwenda claims that since the operation against Among, Gen Muhoozi the national chairperson of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has gained popularity while the CDF scored big given that the public now sees him as the only person who can save the country from corruption among government officials.

However, Napak district woman Member of Parliament Faith Nakut challenged people behind the operation against Among to prove with tangible evidence that she is corrupt instead of concentrating on her life style.

“Legislators and parliament staff have been getting their monthly salaries and allowances on time without missing any month, committee meetings have been sitting. Now which money has Among been stealing!” Nakut wandered.

On the issue of the Speaker giving jobs to relatives and friends of government official, Nakut insists that it has been a practice in parliament for a longtime and previous speakers before Among have been doing it.

She added that Among is a popular person among MPs even though former speaker Rebecca Kadaga and a section of legislators and ministers were excited over her downfall.

Political veteran journalist Peter Kibazo said that Jacob Oboth-Oboth the new Speaker of parliament has a big challenge of overcoming Among and Kadaga shadows in parliament given that they were very popular.

Salim Kisekka the Bukomasimbi North MP said that Oboth-Oboth was president Museveni and Gen Muhoozi’s choice not all National Resistance Movement (NRM) legislators.

He noted that his performance will be measured on them not all NRM legislators.

“I don’t think I voted for him but he is my speaker of parliament,” Kisekka said.
