Haruna Nsubuga of the Fide Master is celebrating his next win in row after winning a golden medal in SOM Easter Open Chess Championship finals.

Nsubuga who also won a golden medal last year, collected 7 points this year to be crown the champion and also walked away with a cash prize of Shs1m.

“This year’s edition was more competitive compared to the last two editions because this edition involved more National team players,” Nsubuga said.

This year’s edition of the SOM Easter Open Chess Championship climaxed on Easter Monday at SOM Chess Academy in Katwe, Makindye Division a Kampala city suburb and winners walked away with trophies, cash and other prizes.

The four-day tournament attracted over 150 participants from within the country and outside.

Harold Wanyama of Fide Master came second after collecting 7 points and he walked away with a silver medal and cash prize of Shs700,000

Emmanuel Egesa, a Candidate master who won the first edition came third with 6 points and walked away with a bronze medal and cash prize of Shs500,000

In the ladies category, Juliet Asaba, a Woman Candidate master won the ladies category with 7 points and walked away with a gold medal, trophy and cash prize of Shs1m.

Olivia Asiimwe came second with 6 points and walked away with a silver medal and cash prize of Shs700,000 while Joan Ahereza came third with 5.5 points and walked away with a bronze medal and cash prize of Shs500,000.

Patricia Kawuma, a Woman Candidate master who won the first edition, this time was in position 7 with 5 points and walked away with Shs100,000

In U-10 Boys, Israel Mugarula of Bwaise Chess Club won with 3.5 points and won himself a smart watch and a gold medal.

Shakib Mubiru also of Bwaise Chess Club came second with 3 points and won himself a Chess board and a silver medal.

Katumba Moses of Bwaise Chess Club came third with 2.5 points and won a ream of papers and a bronze medal.

In U-10 Girls, Magret Nakasi of Lukaya Chess Club won with 2 points and won herself a gold medal and a smart watch.

Karen Babirye Karen of Solomon Chess Club came second with 1.5 points and walked away with a Chess board and a silver medal.

Robert Katende, Chief Executive Officer of SOM Chess Academy said that this year’s edition is going to help players to prepare for the African Chess Championship which will be held here in Uganda.
