Maverick Mukono Municipality Legislator Betty Nambooze has rubbished allegation that she is in hiding for fear of being arrested after being accused of being among the National Unity Platform (NUP) leaders who were planning to put the country on fire over the 2026 general elections.

President Museveni disclosed that defeated Butambala county legislator and also the NUP national deputy president in charge of Buganda Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi and other NUP leaders were planning a violent move involving organising youths to attack tally centres and frustrate the announcement of the elected leaders by the Electoral Commission Returning Officers.

According to security sources, Nambooze is accused of recruiting and facilitating criminal gangs when she was preparing to battle her opponent Hanifa Nabukeera who was denied the NUP ticket as Mukono district woman Member of Parliament.

It is alleged when Nabukeera lost the card, she turned her guns on Nambooze in Mukono Municipality accusing her of frustrating her chances of retaining her party ticket.

However, Nambooze explained that she is not in hiding but she is sick and is surviving on strong medication because of the back pain she is having.

She added that she and other NUP leaders are also human beings who got exhausted after long 2026 political campaigns and they need time to rest while they plan for their next political move.

“This political struggle against Mr Museveni is not about Nambooze or Bobi Wine but all of you Ugandans. For us we are just leading the struggle, why are you always provoking and challenging us on not doing something, this country is for all of us not for one person,” Nambooze said.

She explained that even though she is not on camera together with other leaders, there is no vacuum in the leadership of their party because of the absence of their party president Bobi Wine who is out of the country for fear of being arrested.

She announced that very soon, Bobi Wine and other party leaders are going to address the newly elected legislators in a retreat in the coming month of April to prepare them for the political task ahead.

She also revealed that after their meeting as legislators, other elected leaders especially those at local government level will also go for a retreat.

She insisted that NUP is still strong even though they are going through a lot of challenges.
