Federation of Uganda Traders Association (FUTA) president John Kabanda has accused the Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA) national chairperson Issa Ssekito of frustrating the process of compensating traders affected by Nakivubo drainage channel floods in October 2025.
Kabanda told Ono Bwino that in December 2025, Kampala minister Hajat Minsa Kabanda and KCCA Executive Director Hajat Sharif Buzeki met president Museveni at his Kisozi country home and he agreed to compensate all the affected traders with Shs20bn
He said that since then, he has been pushing for the release of the said money through the Office of the Prime Minister because the president directed Robina Nabbanja the Prime minister to supervise the entire process.
“Because of the elections, all our leaders especially the Prime minister who was assigned to supervise this process was not in the office which caused the delay of releasing the money but after the elections, we are sure that our members are going to get their money,” Kabanda said
He however disclosed that if there are delays, it will be Ssekitto’s responsibility to explain why because he recently asked for a copy of the names of traders who were supposed to be compensated claiming that many of them were ghosts.
He added that Ssekitto has been asking traders to register again to guide government to giving money to the right people.
He insisted that Ssekitto received a copy of more than 480 names, but the Prime Minister’s office is not going to base on those names to compensate traders. He said that the Prime Minister’s Office is going to base on the list they already have.
“The other list has more than 1600 traders, everything was done, now these things Ssekitto has started are meant to delay the process because he is fighting to have that money pass through KACITA which is not being done in good faith. We have been pushing for that money, let him wait, if he is among the affected people, he will be also compensated,” Kabanda said
Ssekitto defended himself saying that whatever he is doing is for the traders’ benefit given that he has experience in dealing with traders issues. He added that he knows fake people wanted to benefit from traders’ losses that is why he is in touch with all the concerned government officials.
Minister Kabanda said that government will only compensate traders whose names are on the list which is in the Office of the Prime Minister noting that it was vetted by security and intelligence agencies.
She insisted that Ssekitto is not among the leaders who have been pushing for the said money and assured traders that money will be released through FUTA not KACITA.
The traders blame their losses on the construction of Nakivubo Drainage channel by city businessman Hamis Kiggundu which led to floods that destroyed their property.
Kiggundu received permission President Museveni and National Unity Platform (NUP) Councillors at KCCA.
