Ono Bwino can exclusively report that the Ministry of Health has assigned professor Joel Okullo the president of the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council (UMDPC) to lead the investigations into former Kalangala district Woman Member of Parliament Helen Nakimuli’s cause of death.

According to Dr Ekwaro Obuku also a former UMDPC president, professor Okullo is going to lead a team of competent medical experts in different fields of medicine including surgeons, Anaesthesiologists, hospital administrators and others.

He explains that the experts will further examine Nakimuli’s medical history and how she was prepared for the medical operation in a bid to guide the doctors to reached a fair and just conclusion concerning her death.

Dr Obuku noted that professor Okullo’s committee has powers of the magistrate court and their decisions can only be challenged at the High Court that is the reason they will be very careful when making their decisions.

He narrated the challenging moments the doctors who worked on Nakimuli are going through noting that in the medical practice, there is no medical practitioner who wants to see his patient dying during or after the surgical operation.

“As a young surgeon, in 2003, together with three other doctors, we worked on a mother and the operation was successful. She had delivered well seven times before. However this time, she was taken to the resting room (after the operation) and we also went to do other things. The next day we were shocked to be informed that the mother died, it traumatised me and from then. So I feel what my colleagues are going through right now,” Dr Obuku said.

Ono Bwino can also exclusively report that  Nakimuli’s operation was successful but she died in the resting room, and the experts investigating the death want to know the cause.

“Primary investigations show that the patient was not prepared well for the surgical operation, and we also think that the doctors undermined the operation thinking that it was just a minor surgery,” a senior operative investigating the MP’s death told this reporter.

Ono Bwino also understands that the leadership of the National Unity Platform (NUP) have also established a team of experts to investigate Nakimuli’s death and their party president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine) is closely following the ongoing investigations.

Dr Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister for Information and National Guidance said that president Museveni’s government is also closely following the investigations and experts are still comparing notes on the postmortem reports that were made on the deceased’s body.

Gorreth Namugga, a close friend to the deceased and also the Mawogola South MP revealed that Nakimuli was supposed to go for a fibroid operation in January 2026, but because of the 2026 general elections, she extended it.

Nakimuli was laid to rest on Thursday at her ancestral home in Luwero district .
