The mighty Ono Bwino is exclusively learnt that Counsel Capt Simon Nsubuga Busagwa’s phone number is selling like a hot cake in prison especially in Upper Prison Luzira, Kitalya and Kigo as inmates seek for his legal services.

Capt Nsubuga is a lawyer practising with UPDF as a defence lawyer and because of his charismatic performance, which has seen him save a number of inmates facing serious charges before the military court, a number of inmates including controversial city businessman Muhammad Ssebufu are looking for him phone numbers.

Counsel Nsubuga is currently representing Capt Denis Oola who is facing treason related criminal charges with opposition strongman Dr Kizza Besigye and his political assistant Hajji Obed Kamulegeya Lutale and his performance has amused the inmates.

However this website has established that because Capt Nsubuga helped National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters like Olivier Lutaaya to mediate their plea-bargaining, leading to her release from the military court after entering a deal with the government, they think that he can also save them in the same way.

“That Ssebuufu man is just excited because he was told that Nsubuga does not need an appointment to see the president. Now he thinks that since he lost all his appeals, even at the Supreme Court, he wants a pardon from the President,” a senior prisons officer said.

Another prison officer said that out of 10 inmates allowed to make phone calls to their people, 6 of them were traced calling Capt Nsubuga and asking him for legal representation while others wanted to meet him.

It is not clear whether a serving UPDF officer can do private legal practice and represent civilian clients.

Other lawyer’s numbers on demand is that of Uganda Law Society president Isaac Ssemakadde.

A number of inmates are boasting to their fellow inmates that if their lawyer Ssemakadde was not exiled, they would have been released even though we have information that none of them has so far instructed him to represent them.

Others like the founding member of Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) commander Jamil Mukulu Kyagulanyi are still looking for the phone number of the serial litigant Kassim Male Mabirizi to guide him on how he can survive Justice Jane Francis Abodo’s prosecutors of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) who are prosecuting him on charges related to murder and terrorism.
