This investigative website can exclusively report that local and regional intelligence and security operatives especially in Buganda and Busoga have been given instructions with immediate effect to monitor the political activities of the National Unity Platform (NUP) leadership in their jurisdiction of work and make daily reports to their superiors.
The developments come days after Col Chris Magezi the Acting army spokesperson confirmed that UPDF and other sister security agencies are monitoring NUP leadership after their party president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine) directed them early this month to form youth groups which will help in providing security and protect their voters in the coming 2026 general elections.
“As one of the most experienced and vigilant counter insurgency forces in the world, the UPDF and sister security services are watching the NUP development very closely, and will not hesitate to take decisive countermeasures as appropriate. We strongly recommend that legitimate grievances against the state are addressed through the relevant authorities, such as the courts of law, among others,” Magezi said.
He added that the NUP political group has in the recent past adopted an increasingly militant and aggressive posture noting that the party leadership and supporters are engaging in highly divisive hate speech and incitement of violence warning that the approach is very reckless and misguided.
“The Great Lakes Region is one of the most volatile regions in the world, with hundreds of armed violent pseudo political organizations clamoring for power and influence. Uganda acts as a key frontline state to keep many of these violent groups at bay, some of which are terrorist in nature,” he added.
Highly placed sources in security circles have revealed to this website that even though the security leadership have issued a warning against the execution of Bobi Wine directives, a number of NUP leadership are on ground recruiting youths to join their groups and after recruitment, they will be forwarded to the party’s leadership school for radical training.
In Busoga, a source said that the launch of the drive was at the party’s regional offices in Jinja City where party supporters turned up in large numbers to register for the newly formed unit, which will be responsible for monitoring the electoral process, countering voter fraud, and responding to threats against NUP candidates.
Speaking at the launch, Andrew Muwanguzi, the party’s head of training and Ideology emphasized the importance of the unit in protecting both party members and votes.
“The Vote Protection Unit will be pivotal in ensuring our candidates are not intimidated or attacked by regime agents. Our members are ready to stand firm and safeguard the democratic will of the people,” Muwanguzi stated.
Many of those who registered pledged to work voluntarily, stressing their commitment to preventing electoral malpractice in their respective areas of deployments and making sure that Bobi Wine takes power.
In Kampala, sources in security revealed that they are following Ronald Balimwezo the Nakawa East legislator who NUP is planning to front to contest for Kampala Lord Mayor seat claiming that he has already recruited youths in Kamwokya and other parts in Nakawa Division.
Others are Lubaga North’s legislator Abubaker Kawalya, Makindye Ssabagambo’s David Sserukenya and Mityana Municipality’s Francis Zaake Butebi.
Security sources have told this website that Edward Ssebuufu (Eddy Mutwe) Bobi Wine’s Chief bodyguard Saudah Madada, Gen Gaza are also being investigated because of information that they are the ones supervising the recruitment and training processes.
While addressing the media and his party leaders at the party headquarters at Makerere Kavule, Bobi Wine directed party leaders across the country to form vigilant groups, referred to as “eggaali,” to protect candidates and safeguard votes.
“You saw what happened in the Kawempe by-election, where goons attacked polling stations and destroyed polling materials. We anticipate similar scenarios in the 2026 general elections, so we need vigilant groups to protect our candidates and votes,” Bobi Wine said.
However, David Lewis Rubongoya NUP’s Secretary General laughed at security and wondered why they are always very scared of NUP’s political moves.
He explained that when his boss rallied supporters to form ‘egaali’, he was not directing party leaders to form militia groups but teams of people who are going to protect their votes from being stolen come 2026.
