Maverick National Unity Platform (NUP) deputy spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro has narrated how he survived as commandos from the country’s security agencies arrested Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu alias Chairman Nyanzi the elder brother to their party principal Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine).
Mufumbiro narrates that as usual, Monday is a very busy day for all party leaders because it is when they plan and make decisions for the week, so their captors knew that they will find most of the leaders there.
He re-counts that after holding a meeting with other opposition political party leaders at their headquarters at Makerere Kavule where they strategized on how to save four times presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye and other political prisoners who are still detained in prison, a decision was taken to give president Museveni’s government only 48 hours to release the prisoners or wait for their mass action against the government.
Mufumbiro said that after Bobi Wine and other opposition political parties delivered their message to the media at Kavule, Nyanzi reminded him of their meeting in Nakawa East that evening and they jumped into his Land cruiser car to Nakawa.
Nyanzi decided to drive while Mufumbiro was sited in co-driver’s seat and his friend who is a journalist was seated in the back.
WE ARE ROUNDED OFF AROUND KU BBIRI
When they reached Mulago Kubiiri, they started getting suspicious after seeing a man dressed like a mechanic filming them and taking their photos.
They thought that he is one their excited supporters who wanted to boast before his friends.
However, when the traffic lights turned green, two vehicles in front of their car didn’t move, immediately panic kicked in.
Immediately, a man dressed in civilian clothes opened the driver’s car door where Nyanzi was seated and he placed him at gun point.
Another person opened the other door where Mafumbiro was seated and ordered them to move out of the car despite their question them on why they were kidnapping them in the middle of the road.
I HAD TO TAKE OFF TO SAVE MY LIFE – MUFUMBIRO
As Nyanzi tried to reason out the operatives, the one who was guarding Mufumbiro’s side moved to help his colleague force Nyanzi out of the car.
Mufumbiro relates that his mind quickly told him that the only way to survive was for him to take off which he did.
“I was dressed in a suit but I jumped in and took off, I heard bullets but I proceeded to declare that I would rather die than be kidnapped,” he said.
He said that he ran through the ghettos of Mulago as two to three operatives were chasing him but they were frustrated by people who followed him shouting until he reached Kalerwe Market where he was briefly civilians briefly hid him.
After discovering that there was no danger, he walked through the ghettos back to their party headquarters through people’s gates and compounds.
Upon reaching Kavule, he discovered that their party headquarters was surrounded by security operatives and the entrance had over 20 people dressed in the military uniform.

SECURITY RUBBISHES MUFUMBIRO CLAIMS
He narrates that he was later informed that the operation to arrest them was commanded by Brig Gen Christopher Ddamulira the commandant of the police’s crime intelligence.
However, these allegations were rubbished by police spokesperson Kituma Rusoke who says that police was not involved in that operation.
Army spokesperson Maj Gen Felix Kulayigye also denied the allegation that Nyanzi is detained in one of the military installations in Mbuya, a Kampala suburb.
Mufumbiro insists that the military should produce Nyanzi in courts of law if he has committed any crime, his lawyers led by George Musisi and family members have been moving police to police looking for him and have not yet succeeded.
OTHER NUP LEADERS MISSING
In the same development of kidnapping NUP leaders, Bobi Wine claims that security also kidnapped four of their leaders who seat on the party’s election committee.
They include; Mercy Walukamba their chairperson, Rovans Alex Lwanyaga, Rahma Juma and Eddie Kayabura.
Bobi alleges that the four were kidnapped in Lungala along Kampala Masaka Road.
Bobi Wine added that they were kidnapped with other party supporters who were with them travelling from the burial of their friend in Rakai district.
