Celebrated Kenya Human Rights lawyer Levi Munyeri who is a senior lawyer practicing with Kimani, Kiarie & Associates has announced that he has started the process of securing a temporary practicing license from Uganda Law Council to join other Uganda lawyers to fight the legal battle to rescue lawyer Male Mabirizi from prison

Mabirizi was arrested on his way back home two weeks back and charged with offences related to computer misuse when he annoyed the person of the newly appointed Chief Justice Dr Flavian Zeija and Justice Musa Ssekaana of the Court of Appeal.

He was remanded to Luzira Prison.

Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court Rita Kidasa Wanyama set 18th of February 2026 as a date to entertain Mabirizi’s bail application and advised his legal team to file all the necessary documents.

Mabirizi’s legal team is led by Anthony Asiimwe the Uganda Law Society vice president while others include Nasser Kibazo, Yasin Ssentumbwe and others.

Munyeri said that he is still mobilizing other senior Kenyan lawyers including Ahmednassir Abdullahi, Nelson Havi who are both former presidents of the Law Society of Kenya and have strongly condemned the actions of the Chief Justice and Justice Ssekaana who they accused of using their official offices to silence dissenting voices.

“I will visit Kampala to join the legal team of Male Mabirizi. I offered to host him in Nairobi if he chooses to go into exile, he patriotically declined. His case bears similarities to that of Harrison Mumia. East Africa is now a tyrants’ paradise,” Munyeri posted on his X social media handle.

Munyeri and other Kenyan lawyers are not going to be the first Kenyan lawyers to ask for a temporary practicing license to practice law in Uganda, currently, former Kenyan Justice and Constitutional minister Senior Counsel Marth Karua is representing opposition strongman Dr Kizza Besigye who was incarcerated on treason charges related to being the master planner of a plan to assassinate President Museveni, poison top government officials and overthrow his government.

In the 2001 presidential election petition, president Museveni hired senior Kenyan lawyer John Khaminiwa to defend his president victory which was being challenged by Dr Besigye.
