John Marry Ssebuufu the Commissioner on National Unity Platform’s Election Management Committee (EMC) has confirmed that efforts are underway to vet and nominate their Nakawa East aspirant Member of Parliament Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro from Luzira prison where he was remanded on unlawful drilling charges.
“Let him not be scared, we shall see how to handle his issue, he will be nominated, that I can assure you,” Ssebuufu said
He was supported by Richard Ssebamala the Bukoto Central legislator who said that the laws allow any person who has not yet been convicted to be nominated from prison citing the authority of Dr Kizza Besigye who was nominated to contest as President in 2006 from prison.
This website established that before his arrest, Mufumbiro had collected all the necessary documents to support his candidature and he used the opportunity when police took him to his home in Mutungo for a search to sign some of the documents which were not signed.
Other inmates like Doreen Kaija and Sauda Madada were arrested after having already been nominated to contest on Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) councillorship and chances are high that they will be voted in office when they are still in prison as it was for James Mubiru the Lubaga North councillor.
The development comes at a time when police and the army confirmed that the arrest of NUP leaders and supporters who participated in illegal unlawful drilling at the party headquarters at Makerere Kavule is still ongoing.
