David Lewis Rubongoya the National Unity Platform (NUP) Secretary General (SG) made a lot of promises to Ssalongo Charles Musoke Sserunjogi for him to accept his political deal to abandon his political ambitions of contesting for Kampala Central Division to support Moses Katabu the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Councillor.

Highly placed sources in NUP say that after accepting Rubongoya’s deal to support him as he plots to be elected Kampala Central legislator, Katabu tasked Rubongoya to talk to Sserunjogi not to put up a spirited political fight against him because he was the first person to declare interest to contest as the mayor for Kampala Central.

He told Rubongoya to move swiftly because Mathias Mpuuga’s Democratic Front (DP) was sweet talking Sserunjogi to join them after learning that it was going to be very difficulty for him to secure a NUP ticket since he has already sealed a deal with Rubongoya

Sources said that Rubongoya approached Sserunjogi, a seasoned politician and a former strong supporter of the Democratic Party (DP) and made a lot of promises including supporting him to become the next deputy Lord Mayor of Kampala or Speaker of Kampala City.

“Even if the NUP candidate who will be contesting for the position of Lord Mayor Ronald Balimwezo losses against the current mayor Lukwago, Rubongoya assured Sserunjogi that he will get one of the two offices he promised him because they know as a party, they are going to dominate the KCCA council with the majority of councillors,” a source said.

However, they all agreed that they should support Balimwezo for the position of the Lord Mayor in order for their plan to go through smoothly.

Sserunjogi accepted to contest as KCCA councillor and he is already on the ground mobilizing political support for Balimwezo which is threatening Lukwago’s 2026 victory.

Since 2006, Lukwago and Sserunjogi have been working together and supporting each other and because of this coalition, Sserunjogi won Kampala Central Division mayorship before being defeated by NRM’s Godfrey Nyakana in 2016.
