Former Makerere University Guild President Julius Kateregga is facing a tough situation to explain to voters why he was denied the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket.
Kateregga the incumbent Makerere University councilor to Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) is running as an independent and voters have been alleging that he was denied the ticket because he is among the councilors who abandoned their posts and flew out of the country for greener pastures abroad just to return a few months to nomination of candidates for the 2026 general elections.
He is also accused of being among the councillors who passed a resolution allowing city businessman Hamis Kiggundu to build a top Nakivubo drainage channel a move that fueled his misunderstanding with Kampala Lord Mayor Ssalongo Erias Lukwago.
However, this website listened to Kateregga defending himself claiming that Harriet Chemutai’s EMC denied him the ticket because of the allegations that he is a close friend to Edwin Karugire, a son-in-law to President Museveni.
He admitted that he always talks to Karugire because of work related issues given that he sits on the same university council like him.
“They are lying. Let me also explain that issue of Lukwago. He recalled me from representing KCCA at the university council and it is the reason why I petitioned court. I’m still on the university council because of a court order. Lukwago thought that I was going to support NUP candidate Ronald Balimwezo against him that’s why he started fighting me,” Kateregga defended himself.
Kateregga is struggling to return to City Hall given that more than five candidates are targeting his job.
