Democratic Party (DP) national vice president general Fred Mukasa Mbidde has blasted National Unity Platform (NUP) legislators who are protesting the Shs15m order to facilitate their party activities.
Highly placed sources in NUP revealed to Ono Bwino that after taking their oath as Members of Parliament (MP), David Lewis Rubongoya the party secretary general wrote to all of them communicating the decision from the party top leadership to give the party Shs15m out of the Shs315m which they are expecting from parliament leadership to buy cars.
Sources said that the communication further stated that currently, the party is going through a financial crisis since they are no longer receiving money from the Inter-party Organization for Dialogue (IPOD).
Sources said that 32 out of 49 legislators protested Rubongoya’s directive insisting that they are also overwhelmed with financial problems after the hotly contested 2026 general elections.
Shamim Malende the Kampala District Woman MP, told her supporters in Kawempe that some legislators are going through a lot including failing to get money to fuel their cars, buy food and other necessities. She pleaded with voters and other stakeholders to understand their challenges if they fail to fund some tasks.
Sources said that apart from the Shs15m, NUP leadership is also set to slap each legislator with another Shs5m monthly contribution up from Shs1m which legislators in the 11th parliament were giving to the party.
Ono Bwino has also learnt that very soon, NUP leaders are going to resurrect talks with IPOD to be allowed to officially join the political parties with legislators in parliament club so that they also get a share of the funds.
However, Mbidde insists that NUP legislators are not supposed to raise any concern when asked to facilitate the party activities because if it was not for their principal Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu’s brand and political influence, they wouldn’t have won the said elections.
“For us in DP, even in NRM, we add little to the victory of our MPs compared to what NUP adds to theirs, so let them be appreciative if they still want to stay in parliament,” Mbidde said.
