Before his death in 2021, Kagole Kivumbi a former Public Relations Officer at parliament narrated to this reporter how former presidents of Uganda and speakers of parliament had been hiding their spiritual powers in dark corners of the parliamentary building roof.
He revealed that whenever there was renovation of the parliament building roof, engineers discovered bottles and other materials wrapped in back cloths believed to be containing voodoo and because they were also scared of witchcraft, they had to pay sorcerers to deal with the said materials.
He claimed that his investigations established that the vice of bringing Witcraft to parliament started when Uganda was preparing to get independence in 1962 when top politicians Ben Kiwanuka, Sir Edward Mutesa, Milton Obote were fighting for power.
Kivumbi’s allegations were backed by Brandon Kintu the former Kagoma county Member of Parliament (MP) who claimed that troubled former Speaker of Parliament Annet Anita Among has been practicing witchcraft to silence and control all legislators while clandestinely preparing to takeover state power.
He claimed that Among hired a dangerous witchdoctor from Tanzania who helped her to build her spiritual power at parliament and this was the reason why legislators including former Kira Municipality legislator Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, a known radical Tabliq knelt before her begging for money and incentives.
“I’ve seen evidence of pictures that detectives investigating her took including a big snake, you will also see them as exhibits if she is paraded in courts of law,” Kintu said.
He further claimed that detectives also discovered pictures of President Museveni, his wife Janet Museveni, his son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba tied with chains and padlocks insisting that all this was done by a Tanzanian witchdoctor who promised to help her to control the first family until she takes power.
Kintu divulged that President Museveni and his son Gen Muhoozi the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) turned ruthless against Among through the ongoing corruption, money laundering and bribery investigation as a way of revenge since she also wanted them dead.
It should be remembered that veteran journalist Andrew Mwenda also gave another narrative claiming that during a State House meeting attended by catholic top bishop, and other religious leaders, Among and former speaker of parliament Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, Museveni played an audio recording as Kadaga negotiating with a witchdoctor to kill Museveni, his son Muhoozi, wife Janet and Among.
After winning the 2016 speakership race, Kadaga was captured on video visiting a shrine in Busoga. She confirmed that she was there to appreciate the spirits for the blessing she received that helped her to retain her seat.
During the 2021 speakership race, Kadaga’s visit to the shrine was used as a weapon against her campaign as late Jacob Oulanyah’s people including minister Bright Rwamirama insisted that they cannot accept a person who practices witchcraft to lead them in parliament.
It should also be remembered that in 2020, 22-year-old Joseph Nuwashaba was arrested at the main gate of the parliament with a human head wrapped in papers. When he was grilled on who sent him for the head, he alleged that he was taking it to Kadaga.
Nuwashaba was charged with criminal offences related to murder and remanded to Luzira prison where he is still waiting for his trial at the Criminal Division of the High Court.
President Museveni was also once dragged in witchcraft talks, in 2006, a Tanzania witchdoctor hired city lawyer Caleb Alaka to demand for his money from National Resistance Movement (NRM) claiming that he gave them spiritual powers which helped Museveni to defeat his political comrade Dr Kizza Besigye.
Former State House operative Charles Rwomushana also alleged that Museveni loves walking in wetlands and forests especially when he is in upcountry districts because he wants spiritual powers to feel him and bless him.
Former senior presidential advisor in charge of media, late Joseph Tamale Mirundi, a strong witchcraft believer claimed that during general elections and the selection of new cabinet ministers, witchdoctors make a lot of money from politicians who run to their shrines to secure blessings so that they are selected.
