The National Unity Platform (NUP) female legislator Goretti Namugga has claimed that former minister Ssalongo Godfrey Kiwanda Suubi’s declaration to contest as a Member of Parliament representing Uganda to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) is an embarrassment to himself and people surrounding him.

The Mawogola South legislator advised Kiwanda a former State minister for Tourism and a former National Resistance Movement (NRM) Central Executive Committee(CEC) representing Buganda region, to abandoned the political move to save his image noting that there many young people who have been looking at him as their role model so seeing him contest for such an office depicts him as a greedy leader who is looking for survival through a public office.

“People like Kiwanda are the ones making our people think that politics is about eating not serving. That’s why they have created slogans like let him or her also go and eat during the elections. Senior politicians like Kiwanda should stop embarrassing themselves to that extent because their actions are damaging our careers as politicians,” Namugga said.

She pleaded with president Museveni to put more emphasis on creating jobs since he is the one running government.

She added that over 40 people picking interest in only two slots to representing Uganda in EALA is a sign that people are desperate and think that leadership is the only way they can get good money instead of thinking about serving the public.

He further accused Museveni of blocking the leadership pipeline and refusing to leave power to the generation of the Kiwandas which has left them confused politically and instead they have decided to embarrass themselves to survive.

However, Kiwanda defended his decision noting that Ugandan need a very experienced and tested leader like him to be their representative to the regional assembly.

“At 23 years, I was already a member of parliament, at 30 I was a minister, where was Namugga at that time? Electing me as EALA representative is a cheap reward that NRM can give to me,” Kiwanda said.

Sources close to Kiwanda said that the man is desperate for a job so that he can get money to service his loan which he secured to facilitate his 2026 political campaigns when he was contesting for NRM flag to stand as Mityana North Member of Parliament and also to retain his CEC slot.

He instead lost both.

Kiwanda is also lobbying for the job of the NRM Secretary General but chances are high that Museveni will appoint Rosemary Namayanja Nsereko to replace his boss Richard Todwong.

On the EALA job, Kiwanda is contesting against others who include; Juliet Bashisha, Thomas Ainebyona, Davis Akampurira, Akol Vankar, Juliana Abonyo, Beatrice Karungi, Fred Rwakaizi, Emmanuel Buhaburwa, and Philemon Bwanga. James Byarugaba, Brownie Ebal, Enid Mirembe, Isaac Mukindwa, Josylyne Kamateneti, Elias Kamukama, and Steven Mutungi.

Others are Robert Kati, Hood Kiribedda, Stella Kiryowa, Ronex Kisembo, Godfrey Kiwanda, Briton Kiwanuka, Israel Kyarisiima, Lauben Bwengye, Singh Katongole, and Ronald Musoke, Muhammad Mwesigye, Veron Nabwire, Winfred Namufumba, Aminah Lukanga, Charles Odongotho, Phiona Rwandarugali, Godfrey Wanzira, Stephen Bujingo, John Kabeizire, Nobert Twizire, Hamuza Wadero, and Juma Witonze

They want to replace Denis Namara and James Kakooza who were elected as Members of Parliament in Uganda.
