Islamic University In Uganda (IUIU) lecture who is also a celebrated scholar Imam Idi Kasozi has narrated how National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine) ignored his advice which was going to soften the political struggle of overthrowing President Yoweri Museveni’s government
Appearing on NBS morning talk show, Kasozi revealed that towards 2021 presidential elections, he was approached by Bobi Wine at his home in Mawanga in Makindye Division Kampala city.
Bobi Wine told him that he was seeking for his advice because he was preparing to stand as president.
He said that after listening to him, Kasozi said that he advised him not to stand for president explaining that at that time, he was not ready to inherit a country where all government and state systems are answerable to one person, the sitting president.
“Such a country needs a very experienced leader, and that time he was not. So, I advised him to get another person (with experience) and they form a coalition with him so that he can be his chief political adviser but it seems he was not happy with my advice,” Kasozi said.
He added that if Bobi Wine followed his advice, the opposition wouldn’t have been in the state it is currently in because he lacks maturity and experience to guide them hence the divisions and fights they have with each other as Museveni continues consolidating his life presidency.
Imam Kasozi narrated that he warned Bobi Wine that even though he had the backing of seasoned politicians like former Leader of Opposition in Parliament Mathius Mpuuga Nsamba, Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, Dr Abed Bwanika, Betty Nambooze, it was not going to be easy for him to consolidate and control power after defeating Museveni.
He explained that the reason why he warned Bobi Wine against Mpuuga group was because he knows them very well because they are people who cannot allow him to lead them and they were with him because of his popularity so they just wanted to use him to score political goals in the said elections which they did.
Ono Bwino can exclusively report that a number of imminent leaders and influential personnel in the country who Bobi Wine consulted when was going into the 2021 presidential contest advised him to work with Dr Kizza Besigye, Gen Mugisha Muntu or Gen Henry Tumukunde but working on the advice of his henchmen David Lewis Rubongoya and Benjamin Katana, he ignored their advice.
He also advised him to be very careful when dealing with career politicians claiming that they are dealers who benefit a lot from Museveni’s overstay.
When he was campaigning in Bunyoro, Bobi Wine confirmed that he is going to chase all meal card politicians insisting that they are just benefiting from them without adding much to the struggle.
Bobi Wine said that he wanted to build a strong youthful base countrywide which will help him conclude his political revolution.
However, Kira Municipality legislator Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda said that Bobi Wine will only achieve this through cooperating with all categories of people with stakes in the running of the country like the army, members of Deep State and the business community.
Nganda insisted that if Bobi Wine fails to be in good books with them, they have the potential to make him fail to control power.
Ssemujju however praised Bobi Wine for his new initiative of mending his relationship with other opposition strongmen like Uganda People’s Congress’s James Jimmy Akenna, National Resistance Movement’s Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga insisting that he should do the same to the army generals.
“The other time I was in the car with my wife, as we were passing the military convoy, soldiers waved at us and I responded. My wife was shocked and asked me whether they also support me. I said yes because they also want change in their country and they are ready to support us in the opposition,” Ssemujju said.
Other political analysts said that Ssemujju is saying so because he has accumulated a lot of wealth which he does not want to lose it.
Muwanga Kivumbi said that Bobi Wine is not the problem and he is not fighting seasoned politicians but they are fighting themselves.
He disclosed that when he discovered that they were dealing with Museveni, he met them together with other influential individuals in Buganda and pleaded with them to end their political dealing because it was going to cost their political careers but they rubbished him.
