John Kabanda the president of the Federation of Uganda Traders Association (FUTA) and other leaders are living in fear of being imprisoned after the High Court issued a directive silencing them from uttering or mentioning the name of controversial city landlord Christine Nabukeera.
Simon Ziritusa, the deputy registrar of the Civil Division of the High Court issued an interim court order restraining Kabanda and his agents from mentioning Nabukeera’s name until the determination of the defamation suit filed in the same court against him.
“An interim order doth issued, restraining the respondent, his agents or any persons deriving their authority from the respondent from further making, airing or broadcasting, sharing or publish any defamatory or disparaging material, statements, articles, videos and audios pertaining to the applicant, the applicant’s family or any of the applicant’s businesses and companies until the hearing and final determination of High Court Case Misc Application No 958 of 2025,” the order reads.
According to Court documents, Kabanda is accused of calling Nabukeera and her family evil people who work for Satan. He also branded her a thief who steals from tenants.
The development stems from a criminal suit that resulted into Nabukeera’s brief imprisonment on allegations filed by Kabanda that she together with her agents raided his shop in one of her buildings and stole merchandise worth millions of shillings.
However, Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court exonerated the businesswoman and set her free but Kabanda through the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) appealed the decision at the Criminal Division of the High Court.
