Peter Wasswa the National Unity Platform (NUP) commander and head of the mobilization drive (Kunga) in Makindye Division has been urgently summoned the party top leadership at the party’s headquarters in Makerere Kavule to brief them on the new development involving Makindye West legislator Allan Ssewanyana.
Highly placed sources at NUP headquarters revealed to this website that last week, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine) the party principal received intelligence information that Ssewanyana has formed ‘a militia group’ to counter his foot soldiers come 2026.
Bobi Wine was told that Ssewanyana took the decision to invest in establishing ‘a militia group’ after Bobi Wine directed all party leaders to start recruiting and training youths through a mobilization drive branded as ‘Egaali’ who will be working under a big umbrella of foot soldiers.
They will also help to campaign for their flag bearers, provide security for them and also protect their vote as they did during the recently concluded Kawempe North by elections.
In his political calculations, sources claim that Ssewanyana is very sure that his chances of receiving a NUP ticket in the coming elections are slim because of the bad blood going on between him and the party’s top leadership which resulted from his controversial release from prison after spending two years there.
Ssewanyanya has already declared his interest to contest again in Makindye Division and NUP is planning to front either David Musiri, Zahara Luyirika the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) speaker or Ali Kasirye Mulyanyama the Makindye Division mayor.
As a result, sources claim that Ssewanyana formed ‘a militia’ named ‘Banyivu’ and appointed Robert Ssabwa to command them.
He gave them the role of mobilizing political support for their principal, provide security for him during the campaigns and to also protect his victory.
“Ssewanyana is very serious, he put the leaders in the Banyivu group on payroll with each one receiving at least one fifty thousand shillings every months starting with April 2025, Every week they hold strategic meeting to assess and evaluate their weekly performance,” a source said.
Members of the group were recruited from all the parishes that makeup Makindye West constituency. However, other sources this website talked to claim that the legislator is just resurrecting his team, which helped him to win the violent 2011 KCCA councillorship after his Democratic Party (DP) denied him a ticket. And it is this team that some party leaders are calling a militia group.
Sources said that Ssewanyana is among the many opposition MPs who have established a ‘militia’ groups especially those in Buganda who are set to bid for re-election but are in bad books with NUP leadership and may not get the NUP ticket.
They fear that Bobi Wine’s foot soldiers are likely to be Violent which might cost them victory that is why they have decided to prepare for them early.
However, Mukono municipality legislator Betty Nambooze refuted the claim explaining that the foot soldiers are being recruited on Bobi Wine’s directives and they are going to exhibit high level of discipline.
He wondered why people like Ssewanyana and those in the NRM are very scared.
But Col Chris Magezi the Acting UPDF spokesperson warned recently that the army and sister security agencies will not look on as opposition and other politicians forms and establish ‘militia groups’ which will likely push the coming elections to a violent edge.
