Local government senior minister Rapheal Magyezi and senior security officers have been assigned to supervise and coordinate the political drive of establishing a national body to unite all boda boda riders in the country.
Early this month, the United Boda Boda Riders Corporative Union (UBBRCU) was launched under the national leadership of Frank Mawejje as the national chairperson, Milton Sadius Owokunda as the national vice chairperson and John Bosco Ssegembe as the Secretary general and other regional coordinators around the country.
The announced leadership will also be in the control and management of the National Boda Boda Stage Development Model (NBSDM) which is going to be used as a vehicle to regulate and supervise how boda boda stage leadership operates.
They have also been given the mandate to be in possession of all the identification of all boda boda riders countrywide and those not registered with their association will not be allowed to operate anywhere in the country.
Before he was appointed to lead fellow boda boda riders countrywide, Mawejje, who has been the chairperson of boda boda riders in Kawempe Division confirmed that they got the idea of uniting themselves under one body when they were taken for training in patriotism at the military school in Kaweweta Nakaseke district where President Museveni was the chief guest.
He explained that Minister Magyezi through the Uganda Local Government Association (ULGA) helped them to fish boda boda riders with good conduct for election as regional coordinators noting that they will continue helping them to provide leadership training and skills to the elected leaders.
Mawejje emphasised that the formation of their organisation is not politically motivated. They want to change their way of life by encouraging the public including themselves to participate in all government programmes especially those brought to fight poverty like Perish Development Model (PDM) and Emyooga.
He said that they have already established SACCOs where they will save and borrow money to be used to develop themselves.
However, this money will have restrictions and none members will nto benefit from their SACCOs plus indiscipline members will be punished.
He confirmed that members found guilty of fighting president Museveni’s government, sabotaging government programmes will be expelled from the association and will not be allowed to ride boda bodas again until they apologise and serve the sentence given.
Highly placed sources in security confirmed to this website that the formation of the national boda boda riders association has been in the pipeline since the banning of boda boda 2010 and the imprisonment of their national coordinator Abdallah Kitatta and other leaders on treason related criminal charges before military courts.
The dismantling of the deadly boda boda 2010 resulted from the dismissal of Gen Kale Kayihura from the office of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
Kayihura was also charged with criminal charges in the military court but he was later released, retired and discharged from the army.
He is currently is executing a sensitive political assignment given to him by his long-time boss president Museveni.
Sources claim that boda boda 2010 was infiltrated by criminals from foreign countries who wanted to use the riders to disrupt Uganda’s security through civil disobedience, riots and their main target was to overthrow president Museveni’s government.
At first, Kampala junior Minister Christopher Kabuye Kyofatogabye was assigned to rebuild the new boda boda association assisted by senior security officers in State House.
The President Museveni was frequently briefed on the proceedings.
When he met the new leaders at Kaweweta military school, Museveni assured Mawejje and his team of his full support.
Sources said that the association is going to be used as a weapon to disrupt National Unity Platform (NUP) political plan to use boda boda riders as a foundation to build radicalism as the 2026 general elections draw near.
NUP’s principle Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine) directed party leaders at all levels to form groups of youths and train them on how to provide security during the coming general elections as a way of protecting their victory as they did during the recent Kawempe North.
Mukono Municipality legislator Betty Nambooze is among those NUP leaders who have already started executing the principal’s directives.
She revealed to this website that it is not illegal to form vagilities to fight for the country’s democracy and protect their fellow citizens once they realise that those in security who are assigned by the constitution to protect them are violating their rights, kidnapping them, torturing them and detaining them without trial.
Sources in security allege that since 2021, Bobi Wine has been building a vigilante force among boda boda riders who he allegedly gave boda bodas on a loan basis.
“Unlike politicians in government and some in opposition who pay boda boda riders to escort them when they are going for a political event, Bobi Wine is not paying those people, they by fuel, service their boda bodas and do everything without asking for anything from him because they know that he is their boss in the shadows,” a security source claim.
He narrated that Bobi Wine through his party Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya only facilitates coordinators who supervise those who received the motorcycles on a loan that they are servicing as the boss directed.
This website has also established that intelligence is also monitoring city traders who import goods into the country suspecting that they are being used to transport Bobi Wine’s money from his funders abroad into the country through goods that they sell once they are brough into the country and share the money.
This reporter has learnt that intelligence turned their guns on traders and the entire business community after tightening their nose on the running of the Non Governmental Organisation who they also accused of helping Bobi Wine to transport money he used in the 2021 presidential elections from his foreign funders.
This is the reason why a number of them did not have their licenses renewed.
