Maverick Kira Municipality legislator Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda has narrated how troubled Busiro East Member of parliament Medard Lubega Ssegona grilled opposition strongman Dr Kizza Besigye on a power sharing deal after President Museveni’s downfall.
He divulged that in one of the many meetings that Besigye held with them as leaders in opposition, even him and Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi the Butambala county legislator and other members of the defunct Suubi political pressure group were scared of asking Besigye tough questions because of the much respect they gave him.
It was not until Ssegona helped them to raise some controversial issues.
“One time in one of the many meetings we held at Dr Besigye’s Kasangati home, we were shocked when Ssegona asked Besigye to think about signing a Memorandum of Understanding with him as young politicians from Buganda agreeing on how we were going to share power after taking it from Museveni. He told him that people always change once they take power. He cited what Museveni did to people of Buganda who now have nothing to show as evidence apart from Hajji Abdul Naduli’s bush meetings,” Ssemujju quoted Ssegona
He said that in response, Dr Besigye told Ssegona signing an agreement cannot stop a person who is not trustworthy from betraying his fellow comrades in the struggle. He noted that they should only focus on liberating Uganda and establishing laws that can help anyone enjoy the country without having connections in Museveni’s family.
He added that what Besigye told Ssegona is the same thing Gen Mugisha Muntu of the Alliance for National Transition (ANT) told them when they were still in Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).
“I see you reflecting on how you’re going to enjoy those big offices, drive those posh government cars, but what I can tell you is that there is a difference between taking power and achieving the dreams of your struggle. For us we fought and we took power and at one time we enjoyed power but we didn’t achieve what we fought for in the bush,” Ssemujju quoted Muntu.
Presidential candidate Mubarak Munyagwa said that whatever Besigye was doing was to build strong leaders who are prepared to take over the country’s leadership even though many of them were greedy for money and power.
Munyagwa narrated how one time Besigye lost his patience and ordered Kivumbi never to step foot at his Kasangati home.
Munyagwa alleged that the incident happened after Kivumbi tried to force Besigye into declaring his support for National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine) in 2021 claiming that he is a Muganda and Baganda have been supporting him for a longtime.
Munyagwa re-counted that Besigye explained to Kivumbi that declaring his support to Bobi Wine was not going to help him take power but they should strategise as opposition on how to use the masses to take and control power from Museveni.
