The bail application filed by the Senior Superintendent of police Nixon Agasirwe Karuhanga has been allocated to Justice Isaac Muwata one of the senior judges at the Criminal Division of the High Court
Agasirwe is accused of masterminding the murder of the former Assistant Director of Public Prosecution Joan Namazzi Kagezi filed a bail application early this month seeking to be released as he awaits his full trial commencement.
He based on grounds that he was committed to the High Court for trial which means the investigations against him are complete and thus he can be released on bail which is his constitutional right.
He added that by the time he was committed to the High Court, he had spent more than 180 days on remand.
He insisted that his prolonged detention without trial violates his constitutional rights to a free and fair trial yet he is still innocent according Uganda’s criminal laws.
He told court that he is his family’s bread winner and thus his continued detention makes his family to suffer yet he has a place of abode where they can get him when needed by court.
Agasirwe who was Gen Edward Kale Kayihura’s blue eyed boy and a former commandant of the police’s feared flying squad was arrested in 2025 after a UPDF deserter who is one of the suspects in Kagezi murder trial Daniel Kiwanuka Kisekka accused him of masterminding Kagezi’s murder. He was arrested together with Abdul Ssemujju alias Minana who was a police informer.
Sources in security claim that Kagezi’s murder resulted from the misunderstanding she developed with feared Agasirwe on how to deal with the prosecution of the 2010 Kyadondo rugby ground and Kabalagala twin bomb suspects.
By the time of her murder, Kagezi was seeking for an appointment with President Museveni to report to him police officers who fueling criminalities in police and she had already sanctioned a number of criminal charges against them.
