When parents take their children to campus, they expect them to return home with both academic excellence and life partners.
For Hakim, (not real name) it was almost his parents’ wish until his partner chose his loaded friend over him.
“We were really in love and had moved in together. She was and is still the only girl I will ever love. I thought it was just a misunderstanding until I saw pictures that proved she had really moved on,” he recalls
Hakim narrates that during his first year at Makerere, he fell in love with (Lisa) not real name. He explains that he provided all he could because he was also a student with Faith that being on the basketball team would open big doors for him and he would treat Lisa like the queen she was to him.
“The problem was Lisa was coming from a wealthy family. She also had rich friends who were ambitious and lived luxurious lifestyles at school. I thought she understood my status and was okay with our gradual growth.
I was never negative about her lifestyle. We were a normal couple not knowing my friend would sneak in at our hostel and take her out. He had money and a car so it was easy for him to get girls’ hearts.

They dated behind my back for a very long time until our mutual friend and neighbor realized that whenever I was not home, my teammate and friend would pick Lisa up and bring her back at their convenience. Because we were playing on the same basketball team, they always knew my movements and never gave me any doubts,” he recalls.
Hakim narrates that once their mutual friend and neighbor confronted Lisa and asked her what she was up to. She explained to her that my teammate had her future because he had the money and could afford her lifestyle. I got to learn about this later.
“One day Lisa told me she was pregnant with my child. Both of us were not ready. We had never introduced each other to our families and I was really scared of her parents’ reaction. She asked me for abortion money which I didn’t have at the moment but was trying my best to get it for her. She suggested that I get her the money before a certain date or else our relationship would end. She said if she funded the abortion, it would make us even and free to move on. I failed and she dumped me. I tried bringing her back because I believed our love was stronger only to be surprised with pictures of their introduction ceremony with my other friend. It really broke me down. She was never pregnant and used the excuse to dump me,” he says.
Hakim retaliated by dating one of Lisa’s friends thinking she would get jealous and run back to him but it never worked. It was him alone hurting. He says his ex is happily married but he has failed to move on and love again.
