James Magode Ikuya the state minister in charge of the East African Affairs has confirmed to Ono Bwino that cabinet has resolved that legislators to represent Uganda in the East African Assembly should be elected from serving Members of Parliament instead of allowing candidates to contest for the nine positions

He revealed that the Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka was directed to draft the laws and rules to be followed during the election of the country’s representative in the regional parliament which is expected to take place before May 2026

Magode explained that the decision was taken after the regional heads of States endorsed the decision of the regional council of ministers to have partner states pay salaries and allowances of their representatives in the regional parliament.

He noted that Uganda has all that money to pay for regional legislators since the adopted legislators will be elected from the serving MPs and the Attorney General will guide on how the process will be handled.

The regional Heads of States endorsed the decision to reduce the budget burden on the Eats African community which was badly affecting some partner states who don’t pay their annual contribution to the community

The development comes after a number of defeated legislators including former minister in charge of tourism Godffrey Kiwanda Suubi, Moses Nsereko who crossed from National Unity Platform (NUP) to National Resistance Movement (NRM) after losing the Kawempe North MP position, Christine Nakimwero the outgoing Kiboga district MP and many others.

They are fighting to replace James Kakooza who was elected as an  MP to represent the elderly in Buganda and Denis Namara who defeated Barnabas Tikasimire in Buyaga West.

The replacement, according to Attorney General will be done after the said legislators who have been serving in the regional parliament taker oath as MPs in Uganda

2027 is when the elections of the regional legislators will be done.
