Controversial Mukono Municipality legislator Betty Nambooze wants city businessman and also the chairperson of the Council of Abavandimwe to be prosecuted over allegations of inciting Banyarwanda in Uganda against other Ugandans.

Nambooze explained that because of inter marriages, it is very difficult to differentiate between Ugandans of Ugandan origin and those of Rwanda origin. That is why they are all supporting each other as brothers and sisters.

However, she warned that people like Gashumba who have their personal interests are set to create a rift between the two groups by inciting a certain group through portraying it as being superior to the other which is likely to annoy the inferior group.

Nambooze alleged that on several occasions, she has heard Gashumba boasting that it is only people with Rwanda origin that can determine who will be President of Uganda.

Nambooze explained that such statements can annoy other groups of people in Uganda.

She further accused Gashumba of using the election period in Uganda to compromise President Museveni and force him to make statements which are dividing Ugandans because he is scared that without making such statements, people with Rwanda origin may not vote for him.

She warned that this is a terrible precedent that is being set.

She added that the actions of Gashumba and Museveni are geared towards compromising the people of Rwanda Origin to think that without Museveni their stay in Uganda is threatened which is not true because Ugandans have always looked at them as fellow Ugandans from another tribe since Uganda has many tribes.

“What if other Ugandans join hands and fight Museveni out of power, it means people of Rwanda origin should also leave. Gashumba should get serious things to do instead of dividing Ugandans which will result into destabilizing our country,” Nambooze said.

Nambooze made a warning days after Gashumba and other members of the council of Abavandimwe celebrated the orders issued by President Museveni who directed National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) and other agencies working under the Ministry of Internal Affairs to stop discriminating Ugandans of Rwanda origin through denying them national identity cards and Ugandan passports which are supposed to help them receive government services.

The president directed that the verification process of issuing identity cards and passports to Ugandans with Rwanda origin should be done at local government levels not only at NIRA or at Internal Affairs headquarters in Kampala.

Gashumba insists that he has evidence that Ugandans with Rwanda origin have been denied identity cards and passports because of their background and their facial appearance even though Uganda is their home country.
