Celia Nagawa judge of the Family Division of the High Court has dissolved a 36-year-old marriage between former Ministry of Works and Transport Permanent Secretary Alex Bwangamoi Okello and Victoria Awor the former Makerere university Assistant Registrar.

The judge satisfied with Okello’s unchallenged grounds which included cruelty, desertion and persistence quarrelsomeness which he presented to court supporting his petition seeking for dissolution of their marriage which he claims caused emotional distress and undermined his mental peace.

“A Decree Nisi is hereby pronounced dissolving the marriage between the Petitioner Alex Bwangamoi Okello, and the Respondent Victoria Awor, contracted on the 6th day of January 1990 at All Saints Cathedral, Kampala District,” the judge stated.

According to Court records, the couple were blessed with three children who are now all adults but after officialising their marriage, the wife’s character changes drastically to the extent that she refused to support her husband as a wife.

He was shocked on 13th December, 2005 when his wife left and abandoned their matrimonial home at Plot 415B Nakasero Hill Road Kampala city leaving him to single- handedly take care of the children who were then still young.

She learnt that the wife went to reside at Makerere University where she was working and when she retired from public service, she declined to return to their matrimonial home and moved to her village in Bobi Sub country Omoro district to stay alone.

Okello narrated to court the efforts and pleas he made to facilitate the return of his wife to their matrimonial home including reconciliation meetings with their respective best man, matron, and the Bishop of Gulu Church of Uganda did not yield any results.

“For the last 19 years, the Petitioner and Respondent have lived apart. The Petitioner avers that their marriage has irretrievably broken down and there is no hope for reconciliation,” Court documents read.

Even though Okello provided Court with evidence proving that he served Awor Court documents to defend the suit, she declined to file her defense which forced Court to base on the petitioner’s evidence to rule that they share the multibillion properties they obtained during their marriage tenure.

They include land comprising LRV 2550 Folio 14, Plot 4 Onono Road, Senior Quarters, Gulu District, registered in the name of the Petitioner which remained a sole property to him.

Land comprised in LRV 2000 Folio 13, Kyadondo Block 232 Plot 1039, at Kireka, Kira Municipality, Wakiso District, registered in the name of the Petitioner also remained a sole property to him.

For the commercial plot along the Kampala-Gulu Road at Bweyale Town Council, Kiryandongo District, the judge directed that it should be shared equally between the couple.

The Land in Lugazi at Lugazi Town Council was given to the wife and unregistered land at Labworomor Village, is also was also given to her as sole and exclusive property.
