Kampala City Traders Association(KACITA) national chairperson Hajji Issa Ssekito has confirmed to Ono Bwino that Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has assured them that in three weeks to come, the Ministry of Finance is going to release Shs20bn which President Yoweri Museveni promised to give to traders affected by the October Nakivubo drainage channel floods.
Nabbanja made the announcement in the meeting she summoned at her office which was attended by officials from the Ministry of Finance, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), operatives from the Internal Security Organization (ISO) and city traders’ leadership in which she noted that the release of the money has been delayed because of the verification process.
John Kabanda the Federation of Uganda Traders Association (FUTA) told Ono Bwino that more than one thousand traders are set to be compensated and all their details have been filed with the Ministry of Finance.
He pleaded with traders to hold their planned strike over the said money until the three weeks ultimatum given by the government expires.
Government sources told Ono Bwino that each trader is going to receive money between Shs5m to Shs10m based on the ISO report and the money will be deposited on the victims’ bank accounts.
Traders claim that floods which destroyed their merchandises worth billions of shillings were caused by the action of the city businessman Hamis Kiggundu who allegedly blocked Nakivubo channel while he was building shops on top of it.
