This mighty investigative website can exclusively report that the Chief Justice Owiny Dollo has suspended new hearings of appeals from the Court of Appeal which also doubles as the Constitutional Court directing justices on the highest court in the land to clear their backlog.

The directive comes at a time when Elizabeth Akullo Ogwal was preparing a supreme court session which was expected in the coming few weeks and all the necessary requirements for the session to take place were obtained.

However, these plans were placed on hold by the Chief Justice’s order.

Dollo directed that Justices together with their assistants should concentrate on writing the pending judgements before adding more by holding fresh hearings of the appeals.

According to the judiciary record, the Supreme Court has a case backlog of 563 cases and recently, Ogwal, the registrar said that they have started the process of mediating some of the parties without waiting for justices to determine their cases as a mechanism of clearing backlog.

Justice Dollo also advocated for the alternative dispute resolution and mediations noting that it is one of the mechanisms that will be used to clear court backlogs in the judiciary.

Justice Dollo’s directive comes at a time when his deputy Justice Dr Flavian Zeija had just issued directives of not course listing fresh cases to be heard at the Court of Appeal and at the Constitutional Court until the current court backlog is cleared.
